President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Saturday that the Starlink satellite network and the military's Starshield system have resumed full speed operations. The restoration occurred overnight, ending a period of more than a week where connectivity was limited. Zelenskyy posted on X that the systems are now operating at their pre-restriction levels, stating, "The speeds are now where they need to be."

Ukraine's Defense Ministry confirmed the recovery through internal monitoring systems. Connectivity is holding stable at speeds above 250 mph. Prior to this restoration, restrictions capped speeds at approximately 100 mph. The ministry noted that the lower speed hampered drone interception efforts and disrupted various military missions. The return to higher bandwidth removes a technical constraint on front-line operations.

The reliance on these satellite systems is central to Ukraine's defense infrastructure against Russia. The network supports drone operations, logistics for food and water, and communications along the front line. Zelenskyy emphasized that the service also aids in protecting against Iranian-made Shahed drones. Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara attributed the speed recovery to "direct dialogue" initiated by Zelenskyy. He described the result as important for service members, logistics, and communications.

The cause of the initial slowdown created friction between Washington and Kyiv. Ukrainian officials told NBC that the U.S. government was behind the restrictions, asserting that SpaceX acted on a "message from [the] American government." Elon Musk clarified the control structure on Oct. 14. He stated that Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government and that speed limits are decided by the US military and the president. The Trump administration has denied direct interference with Ukraine's access to the system.

President Trump declined to specify who ordered the restrictions when speaking to reporters on Friday. "I wouldn't tell you if I did know," he said. He also defended SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, describing him as a fair person. Zelenskyy thanked "all Americans" in his post, specifically naming members of Congress, the State Department, and President Trump for their roles in the process.

The restoration of speeds arrives as a U.S.-led push for peace talks gains momentum. Russia has agreed to a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and the United States next month. The two sides also agreed to a localized ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied southern city. The White House stated that First Lady Melania Trump brokered the deal, which includes humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation. Fighting continues elsewhere, with Ukraine attacking a chemical plant in Tolyatti and a Russian drone striking a residential building in Kyiv's Obolon District on Saturday.
