35 years. That is the duration of continuous operations at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center since it first opened its doors in 1990. The facility in Federal Way has maintained a dual function as a site for elite competition and a local resource for recreational swimming.

King County Council member Pete von Reichbauer announced the milestone through a press release. He noted that the center has evolved into an international destination for competitive swimming and diving. The venue has hosted major competitions while simultaneously providing residents with opportunities to learn swim skills and engage in aquatic activities.

The facility has welcomed a range of athletes over the decades. Olympians and national champions have trained there alongside community members. This mix of high-level performance and public access has defined the center's role in South King County sports infrastructure.

The anniversary event will focus on the legacy of the people who built the institution. Founding director Mike Dunwiddie is a central figure in the celebration. His leadership, along with the contributions of the staff, is credited with establishing the center as a cornerstone for regional recreation.

The public will be invited to the anniversary celebration on Wednesday, October 28. The event is scheduled to run from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. It will take place in the banquet room of the aquatic center, located at 650 SW Campus Drive in Federal Way.
