The Department of Defense removed its chief military planner from the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday, citing severe misconduct tied to the release of sensitive information. Lieutenant General Brett Sylvia, who led the Strategy, Plans and Policy Directorate, was fired by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The dismissal occurred while President Donald Trump signaled potential new military operations against Iran.

A Department of Defense official stated that Sylvia met with journalists outside the Pentagon to share classified material. The investigation covers leaks related to the war with Iran and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The case has been referred to the Department of Justice for further action. The official noted that Sylvia was not the central planner for the Iran war, a role held by Admiral Brad Cooper at Central Command.

Sylvia’s tenure followed a pattern of instability in the position, known in military circles as the J5. His predecessor was forced to retire in October of last year. This marks the second ousting from the post under Hegseth. The defense secretary has previously removed three aides from his inner circle during a separate leak investigation that included polygraph testing.

The Pentagon official claimed Sylvia failed three polygraphs that questioned him about leaking classified information. The department argued that national security was at risk and that urgent action was required. Sean Parnel, assistant to the defense secretary for public affairs, posted on X that the Department of War has zero tolerance for intentional, unauthorized disclosure of classified information. Parnel did not name Sylvia directly in the post.

Sylvia’s official biography has been taken offline following his departure. He previously served as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, until May 2025. He also held the role of vice director for the office he recently led. His military record includes six Bronze Star Medals, one for valour, and a Purple Heart for combat wounds. An official speaking to The Associated Press said there is no immediate replacement for Sylvia.

The firing lands as Trump promised to finish the job in Iran after launching the war with Israel eight months ago. The president indicated he would do so after the midterm elections held on Tuesday. The ongoing investigation into Sylvia remains active as the Pentagon continues to review the scope of the unauthorized disclosures.
