The office of First Lady Melania Trump announced on Friday that a temporary ceasefire will take effect in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in southern Ukraine. The pause in fighting begins on October 29 and is designed to allow humanitarian aid to reach the city and facilitate the evacuation of civilians.

Mrs. Trump’s office stated that she worked directly with leadership from both Russia and Ukraine to define the terms of the agreement. The statement described her role as “Exclusive Intermediary,” noting that she initiated the talks and aligned the parties on timing, processes, and technical procedures. This level of direct involvement is unusual for a First Lady’s office in diplomatic matters.

In a statement, Mrs. Trump described the conditions in Oleshky as grim. She said the city is on the brink of disaster, with a remaining population composed mostly of elderly residents who need medical care, food, and clean water. She noted that residents live with limited electricity, mine-filled roads, and regular attacks. Her office claimed that without her intervention, bringing in aid and evacuating the elderly would have been impossible.

The plan involves non-military civilian leaders from both nations visiting residents to assess their needs. Those wishing to leave will receive transportation to their chosen destination. Mrs. Trump said she anticipates some residents will go to Russia while others will go to Ukraine. She also arranged for Newsmax to document the work of the joint teams.

White House communications director Steven Cheung called the development “amazing news” and a major step toward peace. He said history would remember the First Lady’s tireless work. Neither Russia nor Ukraine had publicly commented on the announcement by the time of the report, though Ukrainian officials indicated a tentative agreement had been reached for the occupied territory.

The announcement follows a recent phone call between Pope Leo and Russian President Vladimir Putin, who discussed the humanitarian situation in Oleshky. Mrs. Trump has also worked to reunite 34 children with their families after they were forcibly removed by Russia. The truce comes as President Trump’s broader efforts to end the war have stalled, with him recently suggesting Ukraine should have a new leader.
