Mbappe says his 22 World Cup goals are enough for Ballon d'Or

Kylian Mbappe has declared himself the likely winner of the Ballon d'Or, stating he will vote for himself in the upcoming ceremony in London. The 2025-26 season ended without a club or international trophy for the French forward, yet he believes his individual statistical achievements are sufficient to secure the prize.
The most compelling element of his case is his performance at the 2026 World Cup in North America. Mbappe scored 22 goals in 22 matches to claim the Golden Boot and become the all-time leading scorer in tournament history. He surpassed Lionel Messi, who has 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16, to hold the record permanently.
His club numbers were equally strong. Mbappe finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and led the Champions League scoring charts with 15. He noted that he finished as the leading scorer in all major competitions he entered, a statistic he argues supports his bid for the individual honor.
The main obstacle in his path is the absence of silverware. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and were eliminated by Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marked a second consecutive season without a major team title for the Spanish champions.
France also failed to win a medal at the World Cup. The national team placed fourth, losing to Spain in the semifinals and to England in the third-place playoff. In contrast, rival candidates have stronger trophy hauls. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup and La Liga with Barcelona, while Harry Kane collected three trophies with Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title.
Mbappe remains confident in his approach. He told RFI radio that the award recognizes a specific player rather than a team, emphasizing that individual brilliance and memorable moments are what voters typically consider. His manager, Jose Mourinho, also voiced support for his player. Mourinho stated that the person who made history this summer is not from PSG or the Spanish national team.
Historical trends suggest a difficult path for Mbappe. In the last ten years, every Ballon d'Or winner had won at least one major trophy in the preceding year. Ousmane Dembele won the 2025 award after helping PSG win the Champions League. Rodri won the 2023 prize after capturing Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City.
There is one modern precedent for a winner without a major team title. Cristiano Ronaldo won the 2013 Ballon d'Or after scoring 66 goals for club and country while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Portugal also failed to advance past the 2012 World Cup playoffs. Ronaldo's win ended Lionel Messi's four-year consecutive winning streak.
Mbappe has been nominated nine times for the award. His best previous finish was third place in 2023. The ceremony takes place on Monday in London, where the decision will be made between players who prioritized team success and those who set individual records.
