Harry Kane received the Ballon d'Or on Monday at the London Palladium, marking the first time an Englishman has won the award since Michael Owen in 2001. The 33-year-old forward secured the top individual honor based on a campaign in which he recorded 73 goals for Bayern Munich and England.
Kane's path to the trophy was defined by record-breaking scoring performances. He led Bayern to the Bundesliga and German Cup double, including a hat trick against Stuttgart in the cup final. The club also advanced to the Champions League semifinals. On the international stage, he captained England to a third-place finish at the World Cup, the nation's best result in six decades.
His performance in the tournament broke the all-time World Cup scoring record for England, surpassing Gary Lineker. Kane scored six goals during the event, placing him in the top five all-time scorers in World Cup history. England defeated France for the bronze medal after losing to Argentina in the semifinals.
The voting results placed Kane ahead of Kylian Mbappé, Lamine Yamal, Rodri, and Lionel Messi. Yamal received the Best Young Player award for the third consecutive year. Messi, the record eight-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, finished fifth in the final tally.
Kane acknowledged the support of his family and staff in his acceptance speech. He specifically thanked his wife, Kate, describing her as his best friend and biggest supporter. He addressed young players, noting that his career required resilience and determination after early struggles. He stated that his journey was not straightforward and that he had to fight to reach his current standing.
England manager Thomas Tuchel praised the striker's leadership. Tuchel said the team is fortunate to have Kane as their leader and expressed delight that the football world has formally recognized Kane's performances. He noted that he had previously run out of superlatives to describe Kane's play.
The ceremony marked the first time the Ballon d'Or was presented in London, a decision made to honor Stanley Matthews, the inaugural winner in 1956. Fans gathered near Oxford Circus to watch the event, chanting Kane's name as he departed the theater after midnight.
Kane is scheduled to return to Munich via an early Tuesday flight to join team training. He faces a league match on Wednesday, a deadline that limits his celebration plans. He described his approach to the break as modest, noting that the schedule prevents the festivities from becoming too elaborate.
