Ernie Johnson will conclude his run as the host of Inside the NBA following the current season.
The 70-year-old Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer shared the news on social media on Wednesday, October 28. He described the move as a natural progression in his career rather than a full exit from the industry. "It is just time," Johnson wrote in his post.
Johnson clarified that he is not retiring from broadcasting entirely. He stated that this decision marks a "turning of the page" rather than the final chapter. He expressed gratitude for the years spent with the program, saying he will cherish every moment spent on the show.
The six-time Sports Emmy Award winner plans to maintain an active schedule in other areas. He will continue covering the NCAA men's basketball tournament for CBS and Turner Sports. This shift allows him to manage his commitments while staying involved in the sport he has covered for decades.
Johnson joined Turner Sports in 1989 and has anchored Inside the NBA since 1990. He addressed recent reports about his health, acknowledging heart issues in recent years. However, he emphasized that health was not the primary driver behind his decision. "I just want to slow down a bit," he explained.
The broadcaster thanked the production teams at TNT Sports and ESPN for their support over the years. He also directed a message to the audience, thanking them for their loyalty, love, and understanding on this occasion.
