Brandon Montour scored with 34 seconds left on the clock to give the Seattle Kraken a 5-4 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. The goal ended a high-scoring affair in which the visitors had taken a 4-3 lead earlier in the third period.
The game featured a strong offensive performance from Toronto's top prospects. No. 1 overall pick Gavin McKenna recorded his first two-goal game of the season, scoring on power plays in both the first and second periods. He also assisted on Auston Matthews' tying goal with 1:30 remaining. Jack Roslovic added another goal for Toronto, cutting the deficit to one with 8:02 left in the third.
Seattle responded through sustained pressure. Chandler Stephenson provided a goal and an assist for the Kraken. His power-play goal at the 3:33 mark of the second period gave Seattle a 3-2 lead. He later assisted on Ryker Evans' goal with 9:02 remaining. Berkly Catton and Josh Mahura also found the back of the net for the home team. Goalie Philipp Grubauer stopped 18 shots to preserve the win.
The result moved the Kraken to an 8-4-1 record. Toronto fell to 7-6-2. Bobrovsky, who played without a backup for the final minute, made 12 saves during the loss. McKenna now has five goals in 15 games this season, while Matthews has 10.
Both teams head back on the road this week. The Maple Leafs will face San Jose on Saturday night. The Kraken travel to Calgary for a game on Friday night.
