A 36-year-old British woman died in Bimini on Tuesday after a strong current carried her away while she attempted to rescue her two sons.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force stated that the incident began near the southern point of the island. The woman was snorkeling with her husband and two children when the water movement swept the boys away. She swam toward them to provide assistance but was also pulled into the current. Officers later recovered both boys from the water.
Local time at the scene was shortly after 10 a.m. when officers at the Alice Town police station received a report regarding an unresponsive woman. The report placed her at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. Police records indicate that bystanders had already transported her to a local clinic for medical care.
A local doctor at the clinic pronounced the woman dead despite resuscitation efforts. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after her rescue from the water. The woman is believed to be from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire.
The force said foul play is not suspected in the case. An autopsy is scheduled to be performed to determine the specific cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that British officials are in contact with local authorities to support the family.
The investigation remains active as the Royal Bahamas Police Force continues to process the timeline of events from the morning of the incident.
