Ukrainian forces have deployed ground vehicles armed with American Hellfire missiles to counter Russian aerial threats. Yurii Ihnat, head of the Air Force Command’s communications department, confirmed the deployment during a recent podcast appearance. He stated that the military uses a mix of systems based on operational needs, including these laser-guided platforms.
The specific vehicles and the exact number of missiles in the inventory were not disclosed. Ihnat noted that the choice of defense depends on the terrain. In open areas, aviation units operate to prevent friendly fire incidents from ground-based systems. Near cities and critical infrastructure, teams with man-portable air defense systems and other ground assets take the lead.
Electronic warfare plays a supporting role in these operations. Ihnat explained that jamming equipment disrupts many Russian assets because their protection levels and antenna configurations vary. In rare instances, soldiers have even used assault rifles to down drones. The goal is to place each asset where it is most effective.
The AGM-114 Hellfire is a family of US-guided missiles designed for targets ranging from armored vehicles to patrol boats. Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer, notes that Hellfire II versions use semi-active laser homing. These missiles can be launched from helicopters, aircraft, ships, and ground vehicles.
Ukrainian forces have previously used American Tempest mobile surface-to-air missile systems fitted with two AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire missiles each. In January 2026, soldiers reported shooting down 21 Russian Shahed drones using those specific systems. The new deployment of vehicle-mounted Hellfires adds another layer to the country’s air defense network.
