Global Affairs Canada issued an advisory for Canadians travelling to or residing in Spain, citing civil unrest in urban centers.

The department reports that unauthorized groups have gathered in Spanish cities since the start of October 2026. These actions have triggered riots, looting, arson, and violent clashes between protesters and security forces. Authorities note that some incidents occurred near authorized demonstrations and political events.

The unrest follows a pattern seen in France, Italy, and other European nations where large-scale protests have emerged. Demonstrators are reacting to rising living costs and a housing shortage. A train crash in January that killed 46 people and another high-speed rail accident this week that claimed at least 69 lives have intensified anger toward the government.

On Wednesday, more than 1,000 people gathered in Madrid to protest the latest rail disaster. According to TVP World, these demonstrators clashed with police. The advisory directs travellers to avoid areas where large groups assemble without warning and to monitor local media for updates.

Officials urge citizens to follow instructions from local authorities and be prepared to adjust travel plans if disruptions occur. Travellers should expect heightened security measures and an increased police presence in affected areas.
