Skagit River Bridge Closes for Two Weeks Ahead of Thanksgiving
WSDOT moves up painting completion by four months to reduce holiday congestion, with full lane closures beginning Nov. 1.

The Skagit River Bridge in Mount Vernon will close to all vehicle traffic for 14 days starting Nov. 1.
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is accelerating its painting project to finish four months earlier than originally planned. The closure affects the State Route 536 Division Street Bridge in both directions. Work is scheduled to conclude by Nov. 15, well before the Thanksgiving holiday.
This timeline shift changes the original schedule, which targeted completion in early 2027 ahead of the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival. WSDOT and Mount Vernon officials coordinated to move the finish date forward to lessen the impact on nearby communities. Melissa Ambler, WSDOT assistant region administrator for the Mount Baker area, noted that the contractor agreed to adjust the traffic control plan. “Changing the traffic control plan at this stage takes coordination and flexibility, and their willingness to work through those details with us gives us an opportunity to finish the preservation work before Thanksgiving, weather permitting,” Ambler said.
Eastbound drivers will detour via northbound Avon Allen Road, eastbound State Route 20, and southbound Interstate 5. Westbound traffic will follow the same route in reverse. Emergency vehicles retain access to the bridge during the closure. WSDOT will maintain pedestrian and bicycle access across the river. A shuttle service will operate for individuals with mobility devices when the sidewalk is closed for construction.
The two-lane historic bridge serves as a key connection between Mount Vernon and Lynden. The 14-day window aims to minimize long-term disruption. Drivers are advised to plan for potential delays during the Halloween weekend, as multiple road closures coincide with the bridge work.
WSDOT states the project preserves the bridge’s structural integrity through repainting. The agency credits its contractor for the early completion. The work is weather-dependent, but crews are on track for the Nov. 15 target.
Pedestrians and cyclists can cross the river during the closure. The shuttle will run when sidewalk access is limited. Emergency response times may vary due to the detours.
