Two ballistic missiles launched from Yemen struck the air defense systems surrounding Saudi Arabia’s two holy cities on Saturday. The Civil Defense ministry confirmed the interception of the projectiles, which were aimed at the Mecca and Medina regions. Fragments from the destroyed missiles fell in three separate locations: Jeddah, Taif, and Rabigh.
The interceptions occurred during a wider offensive announced by the Houthi leadership. Yahya Saree, the military spokesperson for the group, stated that forces targeted specific economic and logistical hubs. The list included the Saudi Aramco facility in Yanbu, the Rabigh oil refinery, and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Saree also claimed strikes on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Najran airport, and an air base in Khamis Mushait.
The attacks coincided with reports from the ground in Yemen. The Houthi-linked Saba News Agency cited the National Commission for Human Rights, which condemned recent Saudi military strikes in Sanaa. The commission described an incident in the Asr neighborhood as a "massacre" and reported damage to a cement factory in the Hamdan district.
The United States State Department had issued a travel advisory update for Israel on Friday. The notice warned American citizens of an increased threat from Iran-backed Houthi terrorists and the potential for rapid regional escalation. The department did not change the overall travel advisory classification, which remains at Level 3. That level urges visitors to reconsider travel due to terrorism and unrest.
The State Department cited previous Houthi campaigns against Saudi Arabia as justification for the warning. Those earlier strikes hit civilian airports and critical infrastructure, resulting in civilian casualties and major disruptions to travel. The new missile launches place this warning in immediate context as hostilities continue across the region.
