Elena Rybakina defeated Diana Shnaider 6-3, 7-5 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Ningbo Open. The world number one will face Leylah Fernandez on Sunday in an attempt to win the tournament for the second consecutive year.
The match at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre in eastern China was marked by extended rallies and strategic adjustments. Rybakina struggled to convert her early opportunities, reaching set point for the first time on her 11th attempt in the opening set. She described the long game as a struggle, noting that while she played the first balls well, closing the game proved difficult despite multiple chances.
The second set followed a similar trajectory of tension. The 27-year-old Australian Open and US Open champion won a key break to lead 4-3 but was broken to love in the 10th game. Rybakina responded with powerful hitting to regain the lead before serving confidently to end the match. Shnaider, the sixth seed, had earned her semifinal spot by defeating Marie Bouzkova 6-3, 7-5 earlier in the day.
Rybakina cited the specific challenges posed by Shnaider's left-handed style. She stated that playing against left-handers is difficult because there are not many on the tour. Switching patterns during rallies was an issue for her, but she expressed satisfaction with managing to win in two sets. This tactical challenge will recur in the final, as Fernandez is also a left-handed player.
The result comes after a rough start for Rybakina in Asia. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing and withdrew from Wuhan due to a foot injury. Now ranked number one in the world, she aims to use this final to sharpen her game before moving to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo next week.
Rybakina will next focus on defending her WTA Finals title, a run that begins at Indian Wells on November 8. She described the prospect of winning back-to-back Ningbo titles as never easy. She said she would fight and give her all in Sunday's match against Fernandez.
