Voters in Texas’ third congressional district are facing a heightened security presence as Rep. Keith Self continues his bid for a third term, following the federal arrest of a local teenager accused of plotting his assassination. The 17-year-old from McKinney was taken into custody by the FBI on Oct. 5, an event that has altered the operational rhythm of the lawmaker’s campaign during a critical period of early voting.

The arrest reveals a coordinated plan that investigators believe was driven by radicalization. Campaign officials stated that federal agents had been monitoring the teen, who was allegedly planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The primary target was Self, who was scheduled to appear at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans on Oct. 17. The event was to feature former Cowboys players and other high-profile guests, making it a significant focal point for the alleged plot.

Rep. Self’s team first learned of the detention through the U.S. Capitol Police on Oct. 6. The congressman confirmed that the situation was treated with immediate seriousness, leading to an increase in situational awareness and security protocols. While he noted that he already maintained a robust security detail, his staff adjusted their perimeter and monitoring to account for the specific threat level presented by the detained suspect.

Self attributed his composed reaction to his prior military service, noting that he has deployed to combat zones multiple times. He explained that his background helped him distinguish between a general sense of danger and a specific, actionable threat. He stated that because the arrest had already occurred, his team focused on determining whether the teen was acting as a lone wolf or as part of a larger group, a distinction that informed their ongoing security strategy.

The congressman’s wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also played a role in the family’s response to the news. Self noted that she understood the inherent risks of public service and shared his serious approach to the situation. The couple has a history of navigating the pressures of public life, with Self acknowledging that while he has received threats before, this was the first to result in a formal arrest.

Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the targeted chili cook-off as planned, where he judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. He reported that the event proceeded without incident and that the atmosphere remained pleasant. He emphasized that the experience did not disrupt his schedule, allowing him to maintain his presence at the event while staying alert to his surroundings.

Since the arrest, Self has continued his campaigning activities, including poll greetings and voter meetings. He stated that the alleged plot would not deter him from his work to inform the American public about political ideologies he opposes. The congressman framed the incident as a validation of the seriousness of the political climate, reinforcing his commitment to his campaign duties.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of Self’s prominent stance on religious legal frameworks. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and asserting the supremacy of the U.S. Constitution. This legislative effort has been a central part of his platform, particularly within his district, which includes McKinney.

Local dynamics in McKinney have also played a role in the political environment. In August, the city council unanimously approved an expansion site plan for a local mosque, a decision that followed hours of contentious public comment and was subsequently followed by efforts to recall several council members. These local debates have intersected with the broader national discussions surrounding Rep. Self’s policy positions.

Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the midterm election, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. The teen’s identity has not been made public as the investigation continues. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further details but had not responded as of the time of publication.
