Anthropic Backers Secure Billions Ahead of Massive Public Listing
Investors who backed the AI lab in its early years are now holding stakes worth billions of dollars, setting the stage for significant returns when the company goes public later this year.

The anticipated public offering of Anthropic promises to be a historic financial event for the venture capital industry. As the leading AI laboratory prepares for a listing later this year, early and late stage investors are positioned to realize substantial gains.
Market expectations suggest the company could reach a valuation of up to $2 trillion upon its debut on public markets. However, even before that milestone is reached, the stakes held by key backers are already commanding multi-billion dollar valuations. According to Bloomberg data, these figures are based on the company's most recent private market valuation of $965 billion.
The wealth accumulation for these investors is rooted in the steep appreciation of Anthropic's value over the past few years. The startup's trajectory has moved from a Series A valuation of $461 million in 2021 to its current status as a titan of the artificial intelligence sector. This rapid growth has transformed modest early investments into enormous portfolios for those who participated in the company's formative stages.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among the most notable beneficiaries of this growth. He participated in the 2021 Series A round when the company was valued at just $461 million. PitchBook data indicates that Schmidt currently owns approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that single percentage point is worth nearly $10 billion.
Late stage investors have also seen significant appreciation, though their entry points were at much higher valuations. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for $6 billion to Anthropic last year. At that time, the company was already valued at $183 billion. This massive late stage bet has since grown to a value of $17 billion, with the potential to double if the IPO proceeds as anticipated.
Menlo Ventures has been a long time supporter of the AI lab. The firm led the Series D funding round and has invested over $1 billion in the company over the course of its history. That cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. Meanwhile, Sequoia entered the picture much later this year, backing the company when it was valued at $380 billion. Their $3 billion investment secured roughly 1% ownership, meaning the firm has already more than doubled its initial capital.
Other venture capital firms have also reaped substantial rewards from their earlier commitments. Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. The firm subsequently added another $400 million to its position in the company. That combined investment has resulted in a stake now worth billions of dollars. Kutcher departed Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to possess a board seat at Anthropic. The firm invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C round, which valued the company at $5 billion. That specific position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion, illustrating the extraordinary leverage of early entry in the AI sector.
The upcoming public listing will serve as a liquidity event for these investors, allowing them to cash out their massive stakes. For the broader market, the IPO will signal the maturity of the AI investment cycle. The sheer scale of the returns for these backers underscores the transformative financial impact that Anthropic has had on the venture capital landscape since its inception.
