The National Women's Soccer League concluded its regular season on Sunday with simultaneous matches across all 16 teams. The Portland Thorns secured their place in the postseason with a 2-0 victory over the Houston Dash in Texas.
Sophia Wilson scored both goals for the Thorns, extending her season total to 15. This marks a career high for Wilson, who becomes the first player in NWSL history to record more than 10 goals in four separate seasons. Her first goal came in the 34th minute. Caiya Hanks raced down the left flank and crossed the ball to Reilyn Turner. Turner used a heel flick to set up Wilson's shot on goal.
Wilson added the second goal in the 70th minute from the penalty spot. The initial penalty was awarded in the 62nd minute after defender Paige Nielson fouled Hanks inside the box. Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell saved Wilson's first attempt. A review of the play found that Lisa Boattin entered the penalty area before Wilson struck the ball, requiring a retake. Wilson successfully converted the second attempt.
The result gives the Thorns a 14-8-8 record for the season. They enter the playoffs as the No. 6 seed, marking their 10th postseason appearance. The team, which has won three league titles, will face the No. 3 seeded Washington Spirit in the quarterfinals next Sunday in Washington, D.C.
A victory in the quarterfinals would set up a semifinal match against either San Diego or Utah. FOX 12 hosts a Thorns playoff special this Thursday at 7 p.m. on Rose City Sportsnet. The broadcast is available over the air on Channel 49 and on cable Channel 13.
