Carter Corrigan of Jackson High School won the District 1/2 4A Boys Cross Country Championships with a time of 15:27.3. The victory places the sophomore at the 4A State Championships in Pasco next week.

Corrigan entered the final 250 meters of the race at Lakewood High School neck and neck with Skyline senior Yashveer Brar. The two runners remained level through the far stretch, but Corrigan created distance as he rounded the final curve to claim first place.

The scenario mirrored the Wesco Championships held one week prior. At that meet, Corrigan also entered the final stretch tied for first and used his kicking power to secure the title. He said he relied on that previous experience to guide his strategy on Saturday.

"Exact same position (last week)," Corrigan said. "I was able to outkick him, so I thought, 'I know I can do this again.'"

Jackson assistant coach Marc Dugenet noted that Corrigan’s decision to stay with the front pack for the first mile was key to his success. The pacing on Saturday was faster than expected, which required Corrigan to make up ground compared to his previous race strategy.

"I mean, Carter, he’s a gamer," Dugenet said. "He always works hard, and does what he needs to do to prepare himself for these types of big meets."

Corrigan’s current performance marks a sharp improvement over his freshman year. He finished 53rd at last year’s district meet with a time of 17:17.7, a race that came after an illness and injury plagued his first season. Since then, he has focused on consistent daily training and recovery.

Jackson High School finished fourth as a team to earn one of the five available spots for the state meet from Districts 1 and 2. Junior Logan Rusher placed 16th with a time of 16:01.5, and junior Asher Yochum placed 23rd with a time of 16:09.6. Senior Jordan Schatz and freshman Maximiliano Rosas finished 54th and 58th, respectively.

Corrigan stated that he does not expect to win the state title in a loaded field. He aims to compete with the same mentality that worked in his last two races, focusing on sticking with a strong group to secure a podium finish.
