A civilian pilot faced federal scrutiny on Saturday after an F-16 fighter jet forced their aircraft out of restricted airspace near Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida. The incident occurred at approximately 12:20 p.m. Eastern Time, while President Donald Trump cast a ballot for the midterm elections in West Palm Beach.
North American Aerospace Defense Command officials stated that the F-16 deployed a headbutt maneuver to gain the pilot's attention. The military aircraft flew closely in front of the civilian plane, a tactic NORAD described as standard procedure for intercepting unauthorized flights. This action allowed the fighter jet to establish communication with the pilot.
Following the intercept, the civilian pilot steered the aircraft out of the restricted zone in compliance with flight instructions. The plane had violated a Temporary Flight Restriction, or TFR, enacted over the area. NORAD noted that the pilot could be met by federal authorities upon landing and subject to enforcement action.
The Federal Aviation Administration issues these restrictions for events involving high-profile political figures, including sporting events, rallies, and presidential appearances. Pilots receive updates through Notices to Airmen, or NOTAMs, which the FAA encourages them to monitor regularly.
President Trump visited a polling station in West Palm Beach on Saturday afternoon to vote ahead of the general election scheduled for next week. When asked if he voted along party lines, the president replied, 'Very much so.' He subsequently traveled to Georgia for a campaign rally.
This is not the first time an F-16 has intercepted an aircraft near a presidential event in recent weeks. Earlier in October, NORAD reported a similar interception over Clemson, South Carolina, where Trump supported Darline Graham's Senate campaign. Days before that, a fighter jet intercepted a plane over Cincinnati, Ohio, during another presidential visit.
