The streaming market in Europe has long relied on licensing deals to secure local content, but The Walt Disney Co. and Channel 4 have moved beyond standard agreements. Starting in early 2027, Disney+ subscribers in the United Kingdom and Ireland will have access to Channel 4’s primary linear channel and a substantial portion of its on-demand library.

The partnership allows Disney+ users to watch Channel 4’s HD broadcast feed directly within the app. The service also includes hundreds of hours of scripted and unscripted programming, such as Big Mood, Tip Toe, and 24 Hours in A&E. New titles from Channel 4 will appear on Disney+ simultaneously with their original release. This includes drama series Maya, comedy Stepping Up, and reality format Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Channel 4 CEO Priya Dogra stated that the collaboration aims to reach viewers who may not currently tune into the broadcaster’s owned platforms. She noted that the agreement preserves Channel 4’s branding within the Disney+ interface. The service will feature a dedicated section for Channel 4 content, maintaining the same navigation structure as the rest of the streaming platform.

Karl Holmes, general manager for Disney+ in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, described the deal as the most ambitious the region has seen. He pointed to subscriber growth in the EMEA region, which increased by 30 percent over the last 18 months. Holmes attributed part of that growth to the integration of local content from free-to-air partners. He said the next phase of growth depends on securing distinctive local programming.

The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Disney described the pact as a key component of its global strategy to pair local cultural relevance with its premium streaming environment. The company aims to use the deal to enhance its content library in the U.K. and Ireland. This follows similar agreements Disney+ has signed with broadcasters in Germany, Italy, Portugal, and Spain.

Data from U.K. measurement firm BARB reveals distinct demographic differences between the two services. Currently, 63 percent of Channel 4 viewership hours come from audiences aged 55 and older. In contrast, only 11 percent of Disney+ viewership hours come from that age group. Disney+ draws 17 percent of its audience from people aged 4 to 15, compared to 3 percent for Channel 4. Holmes said the partnership will help bring Channel 4’s popular shows to Disney+’s younger demographic.

Dogra emphasized that Channel 4’s own linear and digital services remain the primary home for its programming. She clarified that the Disney+ deal is a complementary channel for distribution, not a replacement for the broadcaster’s existing infrastructure. Both executives indicated the partnership may expand in the future. Dogra noted that the two companies already license Disney titles, including The Simpsons and This Is Us, to Channel 4.

Additional details regarding the specific launch date and the full list of initial content will be announced in the coming months. The integration is part of Channel 4’s digital-first strategy, which seeks to direct more revenue toward distinctive British content. The deal positions Channel 4’s public service programming within a premium streaming environment for a wider audience.
