Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., is currently receiving treatment for a stroke at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His office confirmed the diagnosis on Sunday, noting that the lawmaker was transferred from a local facility for further monitoring.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, detailed the events leading to his hospitalization. She stated that Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game on Saturday afternoon. Medical staff at the local hospital identified the stroke, prompting his move to Johns Hopkins, where he is reportedly responding well to the current regimen of care.
Herwitt expressed confidence in Murphy’s prognosis. In the statement released to reporters, she said he is expected to make a full recovery. The senator is 53 years old and serves as a senior figure in his party, frequently acting as a campaign surrogate during the ongoing midterm election cycle.
Murphy has positioned himself as a leader on foreign policy and executive branch oversight, drawing attention as a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential race. He recently returned from a multistop tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would escalate military actions against Iran after the midterm elections concluded.
The senator’s health crisis follows a series of similar incidents involving other members of Congress this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., missed months of Senate work due to a lengthy hospital stay and rehabilitation. Rep. Tom Kean, R-N.J., was absent from the Capitol for several months to treat depression. In 2022, three prominent Democrats, including Sen. Ben Ray Lujan, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, and then-candidate John Fetterman, were all hospitalized for strokes.
Murphy’s condition has drawn attention within the legislative body as the midterm elections approach. His office indicated that he is stable and undergoing standard medical protocols for stroke recovery.
