Voters in Washington's 8th Congressional District face a choice between a long-serving Democrat and a Republican business owner on November 3.
The district covers a wide geographic area. It includes suburban neighborhoods in King and Pierce counties, the Cascade Mountains, and agricultural orchards in Eastern Washington.
Democratic Rep. Kim Schrier has held the seat since 2018. She defeated Republican Dino Rossi after the district had been a Republican stronghold for 35 years. Schrier is a former pediatrician currently in her seventh term. Her opponent is Spencer Meline, a small business owner in Leavenworth. This is Meline's first run for public office.
Both candidates center their campaigns on economic pressures. Schrier cites rising costs for food, gas, energy, and insurance. In an interview with Fox 13, she stated that residents are drowning under higher insurance premiums. She criticized the current Republican majority for failing to hold the administration accountable.
Meline, who declined an on-camera interview, shared his platform in a Facebook video. He said the campaign aims to restore hope and make life more affordable for working families. His plan includes curbing federal spending, cutting regulations, and boosting domestic fuel production. He also proposes preventing institutional investors from buying single-family starter homes.
The candidates differ on specific policy priorities. Schrier, who manages diabetes, advocates for lower insulin costs and preserved access to affordable coverage. She serves on the House Subcommittee on Health, Energy, Commerce, Manufacturing, and Trade. She supports balanced energy investments in hydro, wind, nuclear, and technological infrastructure. She argued that data centers should be built in the United States rather than in China or Saudi Arabia. However, she noted they must not raise energy prices or deplete water resources.
Meline focuses on the impact of artificial intelligence. He described AI as a major generational shift on his campaign site. He stated that while government should not suppress innovation, federal safeguards are necessary. These safeguards would protect American workers, privacy, market competition, and national security. Both candidates expressed support for law enforcement, budget relief, and public land protections.
The race will conclude when voters cast ballots on November 3.
