Apple's entry into the foldable smartphone market introduces specific hardware requirements that existing iPhone owners do not face, creating an immediate cost center for early adopters. The iPhone Duo is now available, and tech site 9to5Mac has outlined a list of necessary add-ons to make the device functional for daily use.

The device represents a shift in Apple's hardware strategy, moving away from the traditional rectangular form factor. The company noted that the design drew on the proportions of a standard A-series paper notebook. This structural change necessitates new input methods and charging protocols that differ from the company's previous flagship releases.

A central feature of the new phone is support for the Apple Pencil, a capability previously exclusive to iPad products. Users can write notes and sketch on both the outer and inner displays. However, this functionality will not be available at launch. Support arrives next week in the iOS 27.2 update, and only the Apple Pencil with a USB-C connector will work. The stylus is currently listed at $69, down from its standard $79 price.

Charging speed is another differentiator for the Duo. The phone can reach 50 percent charge in about 20 minutes, but it requires a suitable power adapter to achieve that rate. Like other recent iPhones, the box includes a USB-C cable but no charger. Many owners already possess a 20W adapter, but 9to5Mac recommends higher wattage options. These include Apple's 40W Dynamic Power Adapter, which offers 60W max output for $34, and Anker's 100W USB-C charger with a five-foot cable for $29.

For navigation, the site suggests ESR's MagSafe Car Mount, which clips to an air vent and holds the phone magnetically. Priced at $19, down from $29, it allows users to pair the phone with CarPlay. The writer of the guide expects that setup to work better on the Duo's larger display, with maps appearing on the car screen while the phone shows step-by-step directions.

Protection and home integration also drive accessory spending. Third-party cases include the SPIDERCASE Magnetic Case with a built-in stand for $29 and the Spigen Ultra Hybrid Pro for $39. Apple offers the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand at $129 and the iPhone Duo Case at $79. The phone also upgrades StandBy mode, allowing it to display Home Camera and Home Modular views when upright and not charging. This feature provides at-a-glance access to smart home accessories, such as the Aqara G100 2K camera at $39 or the eufy 4K camera at $69.

As a general recommendation, 9to5Mac includes the AirPods Pro 3 for users with older earbuds. Currently on sale at Amazon for $199, down from $249, the earbuds offer noise cancellation that the writer cites as a help for focusing at work.
