Alaska Air Group: 200 jobs cut amid rising costs
The airline is reducing its non-contract workforce after projecting a larger quarterly loss than analysts anticipated.

Alaska Air Group eliminated 200 positions on Friday, targeting employees in non-contract roles. The carrier attributed the reductions to a difficult operating environment characterized by volatile fuel prices and geopolitical pressures.
The headcount reduction follows a financial forecast issued earlier in the week. The company projected an adjusted net loss of $2 to $2.50 per share for the fourth quarter. This estimate exceeds the market consensus of a $1.04 per share loss, based on data from LSEG.
In a statement, Alaska Air Group acknowledged the effect of the cuts on staff and their households. The company expressed gratitude for the contributions of departing employees and affirmed its intention to support them during the transition period.
Washington State residents will feel a substantial portion of the impact. Of the 200 workers affected, 125 are based in the state. The airline did not specify which departments or locations within Washington would see the most reductions.
The move comes as the airline seeks to align its cost structure with current market conditions. By trimming non-contract labor, the company aims to address the expense pressures that contributed to its revised earnings outlook.
The layoffs represent the latest adjustment in the airline's workforce as it navigates the current economic cycle. The company has not announced further reductions or specific dates for future workforce changes.
